A Weekly Planning Format That Survives Imperfect Weeks — For Real Humans
Every planning system works great during a perfect week. But how many perfect weeks do you actually have?
I needed a format that survives sick kids, unexpected deadlines, bad sleep, and the occasional "I just can't today." Here's what evolved after two years of experimentation.
The Resilient Weekly Format
1. The Anchor Task (Monday)
One task that, if completed, makes the entire week a success. Everything else is bonus. This removes the pressure of a 20-item weekly list.
2. The 3-3-3 Daily Structure
- 3 hours of deep work (connected to quarterly outcome)
- 3 tasks of maintenance work (emails, admin, logistics)
- 3 minutes of end-of-day reflection
3. The Friday Flex
Friday is buffer day. Unfinished tasks migrate here. If Friday is clear, it becomes exploration time — read, learn, plan next week.
Why This Works When Other Systems Don't
- Low minimum bar — even a terrible week has the anchor task
- Built-in flexibility — Friday absorbs the chaos
- No guilt — missed a day? The structure accommodates it
- Connected to bigger goals — the anchor task always links to your quarterly outcome
The best planning system isn't the most detailed one. It's the one you actually use when things get hard.
Perfection is the enemy of consistency. Design your weeks for your actual life, not the ideal version of it.
